Are Learning Styles Simply a Myth?

Reflective Statement:
This research paper was created to address a concept that is often used within academia, “Learning Styles.” It was completed as an assignment for the TE 879 Seminar in Instructional Technology course. The subject matter is important in that a firm understanding of how people learn is vitally important so as to succeed with instructional technology.

Process Statement:
I chose to do this research paper in that I felt that there were some problems with the ways that some groups refer to “Learning Styles” as an absolute science. I wanted to research this topic so as to learn more about how it might be useful to me in instructing as well as in assisting others in the creation of their course content.

Assessment Statement:
I realize that the validity of “Learning Styles” is somewhat of a touchy subject in that many instructors in both K-12 and higher education hold it with high regard. I believe that my research paper is a success in that it talks about many different aspects of “Learning Styles,” and how it can indeed be used as a powerful tool if utilized correctly. I would have liked to have made the research paper longer by adding video examples to better explain the viewpoint I was trying to make. Yet the paper is still beneficial and I was able to have it published in the Kansas State University’s Office of Mediated Education Instructional Design Open Studio blog.

Interesting paper, you make some excellent points, specifically on applying 'learning styles' to teaching and exactly how useful that is.

It certainly makes sense that we all learn more similarly than differently. In addition to your suggestions, I would also question how accurate a questionnaire like the one presented could be used to model how someone learns. It seems like a person could have a perspective on how they learn, which is influenced by so many things, like how they want themselves to learn etc., and it would be quite inaccurate and therefore useless.
